The Story Behind the Rune
Uruz belongs to the Elder Futhark, the oldest known runic alphabet used across Northern Europe from around the 2nd to the 8th century CE.
Its name is generally understood to refer to the aurochs (Bos primigenius), the powerful wild cattle that once roamed Europe. Renowned for their size and strength, these animals inspired the rune’s later associations with vitality, resilience and determination.
Runes in Norse Mythology
According to Norse mythology, Odin sought wisdom above all else.
In the poem Hávamál, preserved in the Poetic Edda, Odin hangs from Yggdrasil, the World Tree, for nine nights, sacrificing himself in pursuit of knowledge. Only then are the runes revealed to him, and he returns with their wisdom to share with gods and humankind.
Whether understood as myth or metaphor, this story reflects the importance the Norse placed on wisdom, memory, and learning. Rather than being seen as ordinary letters, the runes became symbols closely connected to knowledge, communication, and the passing of tradition.
For generations, these stories were preserved through oral tradition. Skalds and storytellers carried myths, poems, and history from one generation to the next long before they were written down. It was not until medieval Iceland that many of these traditions were recorded in manuscripts such as the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, preserving much of what we know today.
